Dane Hurst is a multi-award winning Dancer, Choreographer & Artistic Director. His works have been performed on stage, in art galleries, film & festivals around the world. He works between South Africa and UK and is currently Artistic Director at Jazzart Dance Theatre and founder of the Moving Assembly Project.
About
Dane Hurst was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and based in the UK since 2003. He has performed nationally and internationally to critical acclaim, having made guest appearances with Rambert, Phoenix Dance Theatre, National Dance Company Wales, Mad Dogs Dance Theatre, Akala, Nitin Sawhney, Humanoove, Yorke Dance Project, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance, Mark Bruce Company and Company Wayne McGregor. Nominated for awards in 2006, 2013, 2020 and winning the Emerging Artist 2007 and Best Male Dancer of the Year award 2014 by the Critic's Circle National Dance Awards, UK. As a choreographer his works have been performed on stages, at festivals and in film around the world. He serves on the board of Mark Bruce Company, joined Phoenix Dance Theatre as Artistic Director in 2020 and is currently Artistic Director at Jazzart Dance Theatre in Cape Town, South Africa.

Dane Hurst has created full evening works for the UK's oldest art gallery, Dulwich Picture Gallery in response to featured exhibitions, 'Prud'hon: The Moving Body', 'Exodus' and 'Animalis' for the Art of Violence. He has created site specific works for Whitechapel Art Gallery with artist Carlos Bunga and with the Barbican for Beyond Barbican with Leandro Elrich.
Dane Hurst directed and choreographed 'Requiem: Journeys of the Soul' for Opera North and Phoenix Dance Theatre in collaboration with Jazzart Dance Theatre, Cape Town Opera and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Filmed at Leeds Grand Theatre, this unforgettable contemporary dance staging of Mozart’s great choral lament featuring soloists Ellie Laugharne, Ann Taylor, Mongezi Mosoaka and Simon Shibambu alongside the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North can be seen on BBC iPlayer - BBC iPlayer - Mozarts Requiem
Dane Hurst directed and choreographed 'After Tears' commissioned by Opera North and composed by South African composer Neo Muyanga in response to Mozart's Requiem. The work was featured as part of the double bill programme 'Requiem: Journeys of the Soul' which premiered to 5-star reviews by the Times and Guardian at the Leeds Grand Theatre UK in May 2023 and at the Artscape Theatre in South Africa, Oct 2023.
Dane Hurst curated the 40 Years of Phoenix anniversary mixed bill programme featuring works by Darshan Singh Bhuller, Ben Duke, Raquel Meseguer, Shapiro and Smith, Henri Oquike and Jane Dudley. He curated programme as part of Phoenix's 40th anniversary year which included a 40th anniversary Gala programme featuring guest artists and companies from around the UK, a commemorative book of photography, a physical photographic exhibition and a landmark virtual exhibition.
